Munda is a nice little town on the southwest coast of New Georgia Island, in between Gizo and Uepi. There was quite a lot of military activity during WWII, resulting in plenty of shipwrecks, aircraft wrecks and a military airfield. Other attractions are tropical waterfalls, bat caves, tribal ruins and plenty of traditional villages such as Mbiula and Noro. Offshore islands such as Vonavona Island, Kohinggo Island and Rendova, make for excellent sightseeing trips and picnic spots. For complete relaxation you can spend the afternoon on one of the nearby coral islands (for example Hopei Island) for swimming, canoeing, sunbathing and/or snorkeling. Tours to Skull Island are easily arranged, Roviana Island is known for its headhunting and the New Georgia's Roviana Lagoon and Vona Vona Lagoon offer some of the richest waters in the area.
Besides the stunning war- and plane wrecks which you can find on Munda's ocean floor, there are exhilarating reefs surrounding Munda filled with marine life and coral. There are spectacular, up to 600 meter deep, drop-offs, in sharks patrolled gutters and top coral reefs perfect for snorkelers and macro divers. Some of the underwater highlights are Hammerhead sharks, seen in the area between December and June, eagle rays, humpback whales and turtles. The region around Munda is known as one of the finest diving locations in the world.
